Tierra Firme ofrece una visión general de la trayectoria de Jan Hendrix (Maasbree, 1949), un artista que se ha encargado, desde su llegada a México en la década de 1970, convertir el arte gráfico en un medio contemporáneo.
'Lo natural' gráficamente en papel
En sus colaboraciones con escritores y en sus series más analíticas, Hendrix investiga las implicaciones conceptuales de traducir la imagen de lo "natural" gráficamente en papel. Un elemento de esta reflexión radica en el impulso de superar la escala del gabinete del naturalista para transportar el arte gráfico a una escala ambiental que incluso funciona como un nivel arquitectónico. El título de esta primera exposición panorámica y itinerante de la obra de Hendrix alude al avistamiento de la costa, que sirve como un referente mítico tanto para el colonialismo como para la revisión de la historia natural.
Reflexión
Al releer la historia natural de los artistas exploradores y la narrativa del paisaje que acompañó a la colonización europea, su trabajo reflexiona sobre el papel desempeñado por el grabado y el dibujo en el imaginario de la primera fase de la globalización.
Desde sus años como estudiante en la Academia Jan van Eyck, Jan Hendrix se ha sentido atraído por el imaginario del explorador que encontró en grabados, álbumes de fotos y documentales. Su experiencia como inmigrante también ha influido en su preocupación por el arte gráfico y la forma en que ha contribuido a dar forma al mundo, tanto para los antiguos colonizadores como para los colonizados.
Ger Koopmans, diputado de Cultura de la Provincia de Limburgo, abre la exposición el 24 de noviembre en el Bonnefantenmuseum. Tierra Firme offers an overview of the trajectory of Jan Hendrix (Maasbree, 1949), an artist who has tasked himself, since his arrival to Mexico in the 1970s, with turning graphic art into a contemporary medium.
'The natural' graphically onto paper
In his collaborations with writers and in his most analytic series, Hendrix investigates the conceptual implications of translating the image of 'the natural' graphically onto paper. An element of this reflection lies in the impulse to exceed the scale of the naturalist's cabinet in order to transport graphic art to an environmental scale that even operates as an architectural level. The title of this first panoramic and traveling exhibition of Hendrix's work alludes to the sighting of the coastline, which serves as a mythical referent both to colonialism and to the revision of natural history.
Reflection
By re-reading the natural history of artist-explorers and the narrative of the landscape that accompanied European colonization, his work reflects on the role played by engraving and drawing in the imaginary of the first phase of globalization.
Ever since his years as a student at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Jan Hendrix has been drawn to the imaginary of the explorer he found in engravings, photo albums and documentaries. His experience as an immigrant has also influenced his concern with graphic art and the way in which it has contributed to giving shape to the world, for former colonizers and colonized alike.
Ger Koopmans, deputy for Culture of the Province of Limburg, opens the exhibition on November 24th in the Bonnefantenmuseum.
